The 3-year programme is the ideal choice for parents and students, as graduates have the choice of trying for a professional playing career or forging a career in the golf business. Programme Description and Accreditation
Students on the PGA Diploma programme receive intensive training for their golf performance and towards a career in the golf industry. Graduates choose between a playing career or a career within the business of golf such as coaching or golf club management. The diploma is the internationally recognised qualification for the golf industry.
The PGA Diploma is a 3-year program, registered with SAQA at NQF level 5. BSI Golf is accredited to present the programme by the PGA of South Africa and CATHSSETA (Accreditation no. 613/P/000216/2012).
Students improve their playing skills under guidance from the BSI Golf coaching team. Technical, fitness and skills training come in the form of both group and individual sessions. Weekly group mental sessions are conducted, and individual sessions are available at additional cost.
An Order of Merit is formed from the weekly medals and regular 72-hole tournaments. All vital stats are recorded and used to form the student’s development process. A matchplay championship is also held throughout the year, as well as our popular annual Team Challenge matchplay event.
Learners study the academic component of the PGA qualification. The Diploma (National Diploma: Club Professional Golfing) is registered with SAQA at NQF level 5. PGA subjects covered include:
Business; Business Finance, Business Law, Retailing, Golf Club Management,
Coaching; PGA Swing Coaching Model, Short Game, Coaching Children, Skills Acquisition, Awkward Lies
Sports Science; Anatomy & Physiology, Sports Psychology, Injury Prevention, Nutrition & Health, Principles of Biomechanics, Training & Fitness for Golf
Golf Specific; Equipment Technology, Custom Fitting, Tournament Organisation, Rules of Golf
The learning process includes a large practical element to compliment the theory. Students participate in coaching workshops and gain experience through coaching programmes such as the Special Olympics, organising charity Golf events & Pro/Ams working at certain Sunshine Tour events.
A select number of 3rd year students each year gain fantastic coaching and life experience by spending 8 weeks coaching in USA.
Additional work placement programmes in the golf industry are arranged throughout the 3 years of study, giving the students a wide range of practical experience in areas such as retail and golf club management.
The PGA Diploma is the benchmark qualification for the business of golf around the world. Graduates wishing to become members of the PGA of SA are required to pass playing and teaching ability tests, attain a 5 handicap or below and fulfil minimum hours work experience, half of which can be logged whilst studying at BSI Golf. Students can retain their amateur status throughout the study period. The PGA Diploma is recognised around the worldwide.
Learners are trained as ‘all-rounders’ and graduate equipped to enter all areas of the golf industry. PGA members once qualified will typically specialise in the area of the choice. Examples of career choices for the modern PGA Professional include:
